99.5: What Purity Means for a Mono Ethylene Glycol (MEG) Manufacturer/Distributer in Gujarat
Our MEG is listed at 99.5% purity. That figure is the headline, but it isn’t the whole story, and experienced buyers know why.
MEG is the simplest glycol, a clear, colourless, slightly sweet and slightly viscous liquid with the formula C₂H₆O₂ and a molar mass of about 62 g/mol. Most of the remaining half a percent in any lot is water and a few related compounds, and which of them it is can matter more than the total. Diethylene glycol (DEG) is the best-known one. A polyester plant cares about it because it changes how the polymer forms. A coolant blender mostly doesn’t.
Gujarat has a large textile and synthetic-fibre industry, with Surat as its centre, and polyester and PET makers across the state. For them the practical advice is to decide your limits first and then ask for the COA of the lot you will receive. Tell us the limits for purity, water, DEG, acidity and colour that your process needs, and we confirm what we can meet. If your specification is tighter than we can supply, we’ll tell you that early, so you don’t find out at the gate. The full details are on our mono ethylene glycol product page, and you can read the chemistry on PubChem and Wikipedia.
1.11: Why a Drum Weighs More Than You Think
MEG is denser than water, at about 1.11 kilograms per litre. It sounds like a small detail, but it is behind a surprising number of mismatched quotes.
A 230 kg drum holds about 207 litres. Turn that around, and a supplier quoting per litre is selling you less weight than the number suggests. To compare a per-litre price with a per-kilo price, multiply the per-kilo price by 1.11 to get the per-litre figure, or divide the per-litre price by 1.11 to get the per-kilo figure. A quote of 60 per kilo works out at about 66.6 per litre. A quote of 65 per litre works out at about 58.6 per kilo, which is cheaper than the first, even though 65 looks bigger than 60. (These prices are made up to show the arithmetic. They aren’t ours.)
Before you accept any offer, get three things in writing: whether the price is per kilo, per litre or per drum, how many kilos or litres the drum really holds, and whether delivery to your town is included. We confirm the packing, price and dispatch plan with your quote.
230: Planning Drums, and Where Mono Ethylene Glycol (MEG) Goes in Gujarat
We supply MEG in 230 kg drums. The arithmetic is simple. A unit using one tonne a month needs just over four drums, five tonnes needs about 22, and ten tonnes about 44. Round up, and think about how much liquid you really want sitting on site, because bulk buyers and drum buyers have different problems.
The bigger question is what you do with it, because the use decides what you should ask for.
Polyester and PET are where most MEG goes in the world. As a rough guide, something like a third of a tonne of MEG goes into each tonne of polyester or PET, depending on the process, which is why fibre plants buy in bulk and watch the specification so closely. Gujarat’s textile belt around Surat, and the wider synthetic-fibre and packaging sector, are natural consumers.
Coolants and antifreeze are the second big use. MEG mixed with water is what keeps a radiator from freezing in winter and boiling over in summer. Blenders usually care more about price, water content and steady supply than about the finer impurity limits.
The rest is a long tail: heat-transfer fluids in chillers and cooling circuits, resins, some paints, inks and adhesives, and several industrial processes. If you buy related materials, see our propylene glycol page for a lower-toxicity glycol, since textile processing often needs one. Textile units also buy caustic soda flakes and acetic acid, and you can browse our full product range.
Buyers in Surat, Ahmedabad, Vadodara, Bharuch, Dahej, Vapi, Ankleshwar, Rajkot and other Gujarat towns can place orders. This describes where MEG is used in general. It isn’t a list of our Gujarat customers.
197: A Boiling Point That Makes MEG Hard to Lose and Easy to Contaminate
MEG boils at about 197 °C, far above water’s 100 °C. In plain terms, it barely evaporates at ordinary temperatures. You won’t lose a drum to the Gujarat summer the way you might lose a solvent, and it doesn’t give off a flammable vapour in normal conditions. Its flash point is well above 100 °C, so it is combustible, but it is not easily ignited the way acetone or ethyl acetate are.
The same property has a catch. Because it doesn’t evaporate, anything that gets into it tends to stay. MEG is also hygroscopic, which means it pulls water out of the air. A drum left open in Gujarat’s humid monsoon slowly drifts away from its specification, and a drum left open near dust or oil picks up whatever falls in. For polyester and PET makers in particular, that is where a good lot goes bad.
So the habits are simple, and they cost nothing. Keep bungs tight and reseal straight after use. Use a clean, dry pump and hose that are reserved for MEG. Keep drums off the floor and out of the rain. Don’t top up a partly used drum with something else. Use older drums first.
-12: Freezing Point, Coolants and Why Mixing Ratio Matters
Pure MEG freezes at about -12 °C. Gujarat rarely gets that cold, so for most buyers the point is not storage but the coolant mix. Adding water lowers the freezing point of the mixture a good deal further, which is why a half-and-half MEG and water mixture protects an engine well below zero and also raises the boiling point above that of water.
The ratio matters. Too little MEG and you lose protection. Too much isn’t better, because pure MEG has a higher freezing point than a well-balanced mix, and it also carries heat less efficiently. If you blend coolants, use clean or demineralised water, because hard water leaves scale and spoils the corrosion protection of any additives you use. Tell us what you blend and your monthly quantity, and we suggest how to plan your supply.
The One Safety Fact That Matters Most
MEG is not a dramatic hazard like a flammable solvent, and that is exactly why people get careless with it. It is toxic if swallowed, and it tastes sweet. Children and animals will drink it, and so can an adult who mistakes it for something else. Swallowing even a small amount can seriously damage the kidneys and can be fatal. If someone may have swallowed it, get them to a hospital immediately, take the label with you and say that it is ethylene glycol.
So label every container clearly, keep it away from food and drink, never decant it into drink bottles and keep it out of reach of children and animals. Wear gloves and eye protection for normal handling, read the MSDS, and mop up spills with an inert absorbent, because a glycol spill on a floor is also very slippery. Don’t wash large quantities into drains. For waste and environmental questions, contact the Gujarat Pollution Control Board. For quality standards that may apply to your end product, check the Bureau of Indian Standards and confirm the current rules with your compliance adviser, since requirements for MEG have been revised in the past.
Manufacturer or Distributer? Three Questions That Settle It
A manufacturer makes the product, and a distributor supplies it from others. For a buyer, the label matters less than three answers. Can the supplier tell you what the drum contains and what it weighs, with the CAS number (107-21-1) on the paperwork? Do the MSDS and batch details arrive with the shipment, and is a COA available for your lot? And will they tell you honestly if a different grade or a different glycol suits your use better? If you want to know how we supply a specific order, ask us when you enquire. You can reach us through our Contact page.
How to Place an Order
Send us what you make, the limits that matter to you (purity, water, DEG, acidity, colour), your monthly quantity, your delivery town in Gujarat and your business details, through our Contact page. We reply with a quote and confirm the packing, dispatch plan and delivery time with it, since they depend on your quantity, town and the season. MSDS comes with every shipment, and a COA is available on request. If you buy every month, tell us, and we plan supply around your use.
Mono Ethylene Glycol (MEG) Manufacturer/Distributer in Gujarat: Your Questions
Who is a reliable Mono Ethylene Glycol (MEG) manufacturer/distributer in Gujarat?
Look for a supplier who gives a clear specification and drum weight, sends proper documents and answers questions honestly. Shivam Industries supplies MEG with 99.5% purity in 230 kg drums to buyers across Gujarat, with MSDS with every order.
What is MEG used for?
Mainly to make polyester fibre and PET resin, and in coolants and antifreeze, heat-transfer fluids, resins and some industrial processes.
What is the CAS number of MEG?
107-21-1.
How many litres are in a 230 kg drum?
About 207 litres, because MEG has a density of about 1.11 kg per litre.
How do I compare a per-litre quote with a per-kilo quote?
Divide a per-litre price by about 1.11 to get an approximate per-kilo price, or multiply a per-kilo price by 1.11 to get a per-litre price. Also check the drum weight and whether delivery is included.
Is MEG toxic?
Yes, if swallowed. It tastes sweet, so children and animals may drink it. Label containers clearly, keep it away from food and drink, and get medical help immediately after any swallowing.
Is MEG flammable?
It is combustible but has a high flash point, well above 100 °C, so it ignites far less easily than solvents. Keep it away from strong heat and flames anyway.
Does MEG absorb water?
Yes. It is hygroscopic, so keep bungs tight and use opened drums first. Extra water changes the specification, which matters for polyester and PET.
What is the difference between MEG, DEG and TEG?
They are related glycols with one, two and three ethylene units. MEG is the simplest and most widely used, and DEG is an unwanted impurity in grades made for polyester and PET.
What is the difference between a manufacturer and a distributor?
A manufacturer makes the product, and a distributor supplies it from others. For a buyer, the checks are the same: a clear specification, paperwork and reliable supply.
How long does delivery to Gujarat take?
It depends on your quantity, town and the season. We confirm it with your quote.
What documents come with an order, and what is the minimum order?
MSDS with every shipment, and a COA on request. The minimum order and sample options depend on your requirement, and we confirm them with your quote.
