Denatonium Benzoate
Denatonium benzoate is one of the most bitter substances known to date. It is a colorless, odorless solid used as an aversive agent to prevent accidental ingestion. It is commonly added to denatured alcohol, antifreeze, nail-biting deterrents, animal repellents, liquid soaps, and shampoos. Although the chemical does not pose any known long-term health risks, exposure can be irritating and unpleasant. Denatonium benzoate is used as an alcohol denaturant in ethanol so that it cannot be consumed as an alcoholic beverage, and it also functions as a bittering agent in various alcohol-based products. Additionally, it is used as a denaturant in ethanol blending.
